  • The League of Women Voters of Northwest Westchester is a local chapter of the League of Women Voters, which has local, county, state, and national levels.

  • At all levels, the League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, multi-issue, grassroots organization that encourages informed, active participation of citizens in government.

  • It is unique among such organizations in its strict nonpartisanship — it supports and opposes issues but not particular candidates or political parties.

  • We welcome all individuals 16 years or older regardless of gender or political affiliation to join us.

The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.

  • Voter Service/Citizen Education: We register voters and present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.

  • Action/Advocacy: We are also nonpartisan, but, after study, we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest.

The LWV mission at all levels is, a nonpartisan, multi-issue, grassroots organization dedicated to empowering voters and defending democracy.  It encourages informed, active participation of citizens in local, county, state and national governments.  The League is unique in its strict nonpartisanship — it supports and opposes issues but not candidates or political parties.

League Structure

The League is a three-tiered organization:  National, State, and Local.  There are presently over 700 state and local leagues, comprising half a million members and supporters.  The nine local leagues of Westchester County have joined in an Inter-League Organization (ILO) that monitors county governance and the County Board of Elections, reviewing issues and actions that impact the County as a whole, giving us a fourth tier.

Program of Work

The League defines “Program” as issues and positions we formulate after concerted study and reach consensus, and promote by means of education and action at local, state, and national levels.  The program planning process is part of what makes the League a grassroots organization; each League member has the opportunity to influence the selection of issues and positions for local, county, state, and national programs.
